Tunisia » Maps and Geography

TunisiaTunisia is strategically located in the north of the African continent right at the heart of the Mediterranean basin. Tunisia is bordered by Algeria to the west and Libya to the south-east of and the Mediterranean Sea on the north and the east. Tunisia’s landscape is quite varied with the long coastline on one hand and the golden Sahara desert stretching out in the south. From mountains to coasts, with plains, rivers, lakes, woodlands, cultivations of grapes and olives, oases, salt-plains and desert together Tunisia has it all. The geographical variations make Tunisia’s topography an interesting one.

The North of Tunisia is mountainous as it has the Atlas range that continues from Algeria while the south of the country is desert.  Northern mountains of Tunisia make up almost one-third of the total area. The total area of Tunisia is 63,170 square miles. The highest point in Tunisia is in the in the Saharan Atlas mountains near the Algerian border that is 1544m. The Sahara desert covers about 40% of the country of Tunisia. Tunisia’s major river, the Majardah, crosses the region from west to east and flows into the Gulf of Tunis.
