Longer Historical Perspective
According to the historical information of Sweden, it was 14,000 years ago, that the ice covering Sweden started to melt making the climate warmer. The inhabitants were generally hunters and fishers, later as more people started settling it became an agricultural society. During the Viking Age known for trading, plundering and making temporary settlements they started expanding their territory east and south including what is now Russia. Vikings left a huge impact in terms of trade in the history of Sweden.
The Vikings trade empire after witnessing two centuries of great success and power began to decline at the turn of the millennium as the farmers started to gain more prominence replacing the power of the Vikings with the growth of the agricultural industry. The power structure began to take form during the Viking period when local chiefs started ruling their particular area. These areas grew as time went by and from these emerged the two most influential tribes who formed the two states ‘Goter" and "Svear. These two states later merged and Sweden was formed. The monarchs who left an impact in Sweden’s history are Gustav Vasa, and Gustav II Adolf. Gustav Vasa is also considered as the founder of modern Sweden as in 1523 Gustav Vasa led the Swedes to leave the Kalmar union, a federation that included Sweden and Norway under the Danish rule. Under Gustav II Adolf Sweden within a few decades progressed to gain a great power status. After the legendary commander was killed in 1632, Sweden saw a century of constant war. The constant conflict and wars in Sweden left its deep impact and as a consequence Sweden has always maintained to neutrality in subsequent European conflicts, including both World Wars. In the 19th century Sweden saw Industrial Revolution. For most of the century however Sweden remained poor as a result of which many people immigrated. Norway was allowed to become independent in 1905. Democracy emerged in the early 20th century.
