Slovakia » Maps and Geography Slovakia is centrally located at the heart of Europe, bordered by Czech Republic and Austria to the west and Poland to the North. Ukraine border is to the east and Hungary is to the south of Slovakia. Slovakia’s landscape includes vast forest areas, mountain chains, valleys, waterfalls, beautiful lakes and rivers. Around 40%of Slovakia’s territory is covered with forests. Slovakia’s mountainous region is dominated by the Carpathian Mountains that extend in the northern part of the country and have the highest peaks of the Tatra Mountains. The Tatra Mountains make up the border with Poland. The High Tatra presents a perfect skiing destination with beautiful lakes and valleys attracting tourists from all around. Highest point in Slovakia is Gerlach at 2,655 m in the High Tatras.
There are many lakes and rivers in Slovakia. The glacier activity in the High Tatra areas has resulted in the formation of many lakes. Major Slovak rivers are Hron, Danube that drains into the black sea, the Váh that is the longest river in Slovakia. Vah river sides are developing as major tourist areas because of the ideal conditions for water sports it offers.
