Portugal's Relations with the International Community

Portugal is a founder member of NATO. Military co-operation with her allies is close, and use is made of her logistic and training facilities.

Portugal participated in the Kosovo action; had 930 troops in the NATO force in Bosnia (IFOR); and has also contributed to the ISAF force in Afghanistan. In 2003, in the face of substantial domestic opposition, Portugal provided strong support to the coalition over Iraq including the use of Lajes airbase in the Azores.

Portugal also hosted the Summit in the Azores in March 2003, where President Bush, Prime Minister Blair and President Aznar met to discuss Iraq. Between 2003 and 2005, Portugal contributed with a 130-strong GNR (paramilitary police) force towards the international coalition transition effort in Iraq. Further cooperation is expected to continue in the context of NATO military training under the new Government.

The 1974 Revolution provoked a hasty withdrawal from Portugal's overseas colonies. During the 1980s, Portugal revitalised her relationship with her former colonies in Africa. In July 1996, Portugal and her former colonies formed the Commonwealth of Portuguese-speaking countries (CPLP).
