In the past Oman relied on foreign powers to ensure political stability, domestically and regionally. Oman has been keen to have friendly relations with its GCC partners, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait and also has effective relations with Iran. To promote cooperation between the GCC states, Yemen and Iran, the Oman’s role remains active.
Oman also supports the United Arab position on wider issues of Israeli/Palestinian dispute. Like many other Arab countries Oman is also in favour of peace initiatives in Arab as well as an independent Palestine State. Besides these Oman also have excellent bilateral relations with UK particularly on defence, as demonstrated by the Joint Millitary Exercise SAIF SAREEA II in November 2001.
Oman has diplomatic relations with over 140 countries, a network including two female ambassadors and is a member of over 105 regional and international organisations. As far as the relations with British are concerned, the first friendship treaty set between the sultan of the Muscat and British government of India in 1798.
Trade and Investment with the UK
UK trade and Investment is helping British firms doing business with Oman and is also regularly supporting trade mission to Oman. Exports to Oman rose by 18% to 16% to £56m. At the same time period, imports from Oman rose by 16% to £56m.
