Italy » Maps and Geography
Italy is a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. Italy is known to be shaped like a boot. It has a varied terrain and two large islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Italy is largely covered by mountains and has two mountain ranges, Alps and the Apennines. The towering Alps in the north form the border with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. The other three sides of Italy are surrounded by seas. The Alps in Italy are among the world’s most rugged mountains and are a major attraction. The Apennines run through the center of Italy all along the entire length of the country. Italy has one of the world's largest volcanoes known as Mount Etna, on the island of Sicily.
Some of the highest mountains of Europe are in the northern Italy. The
highest points of Italy are along Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc. Monte
Blanc in the Alps, on Italy and France border is 15,770 feet (4,807 m)
tall and can be termed as the highest point. The lakes at the foot of
the Alps in the north have a glacial origin. The largest lake in Italy
is Lake Garda and Lake Como is the deepest. Italy also has two large
islands Sicily and Sardinia which lie at the narrower end of Italy in
the Mediterranean Sea. Italy is divided into three main areas the
north, south and the centre. The south is the poorest area of Italy;
the Centre of Italy has traditional and artistic cities like Rome and
Florence, while the north is the most industrialized area.
