Canada and Hungary enjoy secure relations. The ties between Canada and Hungary date to waves of immigration in the late 19th century; Canada is best known in Hungary as a refuge for those who fled after the 1956 Revolution. Today, over 250,000 people residing in Canada claim Hungarian descent. They make up an important ethnic community, and contribute to Canada's national diversity. The UK-Hungary Action Plan provides resources to support the UK's wide-ranging relationship with Hungary. Originally conceived as a measure to aid Hungary's accession to the EU, it now works to reinforce the changeover. The Foreign Office provides funds for practical projects under the auspices of the Action Plan in areas such as justice and home affairs, public management reform and financial regulation. Joint relations are outstanding. The visits are sophisticated and frequent.
In 2005, mutual trade amounted to over GBP 2.57(GBP 2.48 billion in 2004). These figures reflect a growth of UK exports to Hungary, although a much higher growth rate was recorded in the size of Hungarian exports to the UK, which stood at GBP1.772 million. There is a thriving British Chamber of Commerce with some 200 members. Over 500 UK companies are represented in Hungary and UK is mainly strong in the Services sector. The current priorities for trade development include environment, water and infrastructure increase all of which should receive substantial EU funding in the coming years.
