Hong Kong » Market Report The Government of Hong Kong is aware of the importance of the property sector to the economy and the community. Its policy is to allow the private housing market to operate as freely as possible. The Government believes that the amount of private housing production should be a matter for the market to decide.
The best way to stabilise property prices is to maintain a free and stable environment for the market to operate while reducing government intervention. The property market in 2006 is expected to be unstable because of the effect created by probable changes in the expectations on the direction that interest rates can take.
International Property Brokers forecasts that the Hong Kong's property market is predicted to remain strong in the long term despite the housing recessions in the US, UK and Japan, as Hong Kong is becoming much less dependent on the US.
The market sentiment is down because of global economic crisis and Property prices and rents in Hong Kong are expected to fall as banks scale back hiring and investments amid the turmoil in financial markets. The situation is not very gloomy but it’s good to be cautious. Rents are expected to fall by 25 percent by the end of 2009 as cheaper new offices across the harbour come onto the market.
