Brazil » Politics
According to the Constitution approved in 1988, Brazil is a federal presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Brazil is both head of state and head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. The structure of the state and the federation is based on the model of the United States, but the legal system is based on the Roman Law. Executive power is exercised by the government, headed by the president, who is elected to a four-year term, with one reelection allowed. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of the National Congress. The deputies of the Chamber of Deputies are elected every four years in a system of proportional representation by states. The members of the Federal Senate are elected for an eight-years term. |
