Tourism comprises nearly two-thirds of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Bahamas. The nation's topography, including its weather, natural beauty, and immediacy to the United States, has made it a leading tourist spot. An anticipated US$1.3 billion is spent per annum by more than 3.2 million visitors, which supports approximately half of the labour force and generates 70% of the government tax revenue. The Bahamas served as a holiday destination for more than 3.4 million visitors in 1996, incurring an increase of 5.5 percent over the levels in 1995. The visitors from the region of America accounted for 82.1 percent of the overall entrances of visitors in Nassau and Paradise Island.

Tourism in Bahamas accounts for, almost 100 per cent of hotel business; nearly 70 per cent of restaurant business; about 60 per cent of further service industries and about 30 per cent of the domestic transportation industry.
