US citizens do not need a visa for stays of less than eight months, but must show proof of citizenship. Visas and passports are required of citizens of Canada and European countries. Air passengers must have a return or ongoing airline ticket.
In the Bahamas the British citizens visiting The Island do not require visas for visits of up to 3 months. If you desire to lengthen your stay you must apply to the Department of Immigration in Nassau. Penalties for staying longer than the allowed stay include fines and imprisonment pending deportation. If travelling via the USA you should have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.
Visitor Visas are without difficulty granted although people wishing to remain in the Bahamas without working for longer periods of time must acquire a residence permit from the Immigration Department.
United States passport owners must have a valid passport or a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant paper, or a government-issued photo Identification, such as a driver's license, as well as evidence of nationality, such as an original or certified birth certificate. A visa is not required for trip to the Bahamas for visits not beyond eight months.
UK citizens do not need a visa for stay of up to eight months. A passport is necessary, valid for six months after entrance, or some form of authorized photo identification with a birth certificate and/or citizenship card.
Acquiring a permanent residency is not difficult if you desire to purchase Bahamas real estate valued at $250,000 or more. In fact, the Immigration Board generally grants approval to such applications automatically. Key international investors and foreigners who have bought, or intend to buy, a local property valued at $500,000 or more, receives accelerated consideration for their residence application.
Homeowners can also get hold of a yearly renewable Home Owners Residence Card, which acts as a visa for both admission and residence for $50, plus registration fees.
All visitors departing The Bahamas are subject to a cash departure tax of $15.00 (US or Bahamian Dollars), which may or may not be incorporated n the cost of your ticket.
