Chicago is a city of contrasts: raging winters and seductive summers, crowded highways and tranquil parks, famous people and friendly folks. Chicagoans have built a city that is to be deal with, boasting soaring skyscrapers including the Sears Tower (one of the tallest in the world); thriving ethnic neighbourhoods; a lakefront business district, the re-energised downtown; unbeatable shopping along the famed Michigan Avenue; and top-class sports teams.

When most people think of Chicago, they imagine Michael Jordan and the six-time World Champion Bulls, Al Capone, the original Mayor Daley. Chicago still has the largest Polish population in the world outside Warsaw. The attraction was strongest among Deep South blacks from 1900 to 1920 African Americans poured in, with more than 75,000 arriving during the war years of 1916–18 alone.

Today, Chicago's towering skyline the city has one of the world's best collections of modern architecture, from Frank Lloyd Wright houses to the 110-story Sears Tower dominates the pancake-flat prairies for hundreds of miles around.
