In Abu Dhabi there is a strong competition and insignificant import duties, lead to some of the lowest prices in the world. Visitors’ first experience of shopping in Abu Dhabi is the superb Duty Free area at Abu Dhabi International Airport, which opened in 1986 and recently extended. The area contains about thirty different stores, their open layouts making it easy for customers to look through. Passengers who are short of time find Abu Dhabi Duty Free very suitable. Gold and electronic items are the biggest sellers. Local antiques and souvenirs are also sold here, sharing the space with international branded goods, including watches, fashions, cameras, toys, perfumes and leather-goods.

The city presents a variety of shopping plazas in and around the city that display some of the most contemporary and elite goods in the world. People from all over the world gather to Abu Dhabi to ease their pockets of some expensive 'moolas' during the Abu Dhabi Shopping Festival held every year in the month of March. One can visit the famous Old Souk; it seems an ideal place when it comes to buying costly metals such as gold, electronics goods, clothes, cars and almost everything. Al Nasr Street, another important market place, has a number of antique shops and jewellery stores.

Department stores, fashion and giftware boutiques, antique shops, and other specialized stores, including some familiar international names, are concentrated in Abu Dhabi's main streets - Zayed the Second, Sheikh Hamdan and Sheikh Khalifa, which run similar to and behind the Corniche. Just about everything found in the western world can be purchased here.
