The usual Swiss trinkets are available in a couple of places around town, although they are not nearly as present everywhere as in Geneva or Bern. The real draw here is a colorful farmers market on Saturdays and Wednesdays in the steep, winding streets of Old Town. There are plenty of boutiques and department stores as well. Note that pretty much everything is closed on Sunday, except in Ouchy, part of which is on Federal land.

You will find lots of emphasis on high-profile outfits such as luggage and leather maker Louis Vuitton. But if handmade souvenirs from the Vaud region appeal to you, head for Heidi's Shop. For artifacts with deeper patinas that sell for a lot more money, check out the art and antiques at two intriguing, relentlessly upscale antiques shops: Antiquités R.S.

The major tobacco outlet is Besson, 22, rue de Bourg (tel. 021/312-67-88), known for its Davidoff cigars. The best Swiss-made linen, including embroidered handkerchiefs, is sold at Langenthal.
