Serbia » Entertainment in Belgrade

Belgrade The historic areas and buildings of Belgrade are among the city's premier attractions. They include Skadarlija, the National Museum and adjacent National Theatre, Zemun, Nikola Square, Terazije, Students' Square, the Kalemegdan Fortress, Prince Michael Street, the Federal Parliament, the Temple of Saint Sava, and the Old Palace. On top of this, there are many parks, monuments, cafes, restaurants and shops; both sides of the river Sava, not to mention views of the city from the Avala Monument, on a hilltop overlooking the city.

In recent years growing numbers of young people, especially from Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, have visited Belgrade to enjoy the city's nightlife. Belgrade offers a rather sophisticated night life. The general atmosphere within the city centre matches the feeling generated in Northern Europe more so than a near-Mediterranean based city.

Belgrade City Entertainment

The Music of Serbia is central to the culture of Serbia and Montenegro. The documented musical history of the people later known as Serbians can be traced back to the medieval era. At the time, the region now known as Serbia was dominated by the Byzantine Empire, followed by being controlled by the Turks. Church music was performed throughout Serbia by choirs or individual singers, led by a conductor.

Aside from church music, the medieval era in Serbia included folk music, about which very little is known, and court music. During the Nemanjic dynasty, musicians played an important role in the royal court, and were known as sviralnici, glumci and praskavnici. Other rulers known for the musical patronage included Stefan Dusan, Stefan Lazarevic, and Djuradj Brankovic.
