It is located in the central Montenegro being a part of Zeta Plain and to be found near to Lake Skadar at only 15 km of distance to north, a haven for bird watchers and nature lovers alike. One of the foremost features of the city is prosperity and richness in bodies of water.

Podgorica moreover being an administrative centre of Montenegro is also its most significant economic engine. The greater part of Montenegro's industrial, financial and commercial base is to be found in Podgorica.

Podgorica also has the main central point in economic, cultural and education, in addition to being an administrative center of Montenegro. Podgorica accounts for 10.4% of the entire territory of Montenegro having a share of 27.3% in the population sector.

Podgorica is an abode to many Montenegrin cultural rituals and events. Many museums and galleries along with the Montenegrin Theatre is hosted at Podgorica. The Montenegrin National Theatre is the most well-known theatre not only in Podgorica, but in all of Montenegro.

The City's Theatre, the Children’s Theatre and the Puppet Theatre, along several less enthusiastic theatre troupes are also observed to be hosted by the city of Podgorica. Though not as prosperous in museums and galleries, there are quite a few remarkable museums, amongst which are the Podgorica City Museum, the Museum of Marko Miljanov and the Natural History Museum. The prominent and outstanding art galleries of Podgorica are Dvorac Petrovica (Petrovic's Castle) and Perjanicki Dom (House of the Honor Guard).

While touring the settlement of Varos, one notices the best image of old Podgorica. Another representation of the city which dominates Podgorica is the high stone Sat-kula (Clock-tower), which is like a lighthouse.
