Getting to Tirana: By Plane
Tirana International Airport Nene Teresa is named after Mother Teresa who was an Albanian. It is modern and the only international airport of Albania. The airport is also called the Rinas International Airport as it is located 25 kilometres northwest of Tirana, in the village of Rinas. There’s a ten-Euro fee to enter.
You can fly to Tirana from Greece, Rome, Austria, Turkey and other countries in Europe. Adria Airways, Austrian Airlines, Albanian Airlines, Alitalia, British Airways, Bulgaria Air, Belle Air, Turkish Airlines, My Air, Club Air, Olympic Airlines, Lufthansa and Jat airways are some of the airlines serving the airport in Tirana. There are flights to Tirana from Ljubljana, Athens, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Brussels, London, Milan, Rome, Vienna, Sofia, Bonn, Belgrade, Munich, Budapest and Athens. Transportation in Tirana is better than in other cities. Outside the airport taxis or buses are available to take you to the city center. It is better to take the official yellow-coloured taxis.
Getting to Tirana: By Train
Albania in not connected to other countries by railroads so international train service does not exist. However, the main cities in Albania are connected by railroads. There are regular trains running from Durres to Pogradec via Elbasan. The railway station is situated towards the north of the Skenderberg Square in the Boulevard Zogu region of the city of Tirana. So, you can get to Tirana from Durres, Pogradec or Elbasan by train. Railway prices are cheaper but it is not the best way to travel as the service is not very good.
Getting to Tirana: By Sea
Tirana has no port. However, the city of Durres, located at a 30 minutes drive from Tirana, has a port and you can take ferry from there. There are regular passenger ferry services from Durres to Trieste in Italy and Koper in Slovenia. If you want to come to Tirana from Italy then you have to catch a ferry and sail to Durres. Then from Durres you can catch a train or a bus to Tirana.
Getting to Tirana: By Bus
You can get to Tirana from the surrounding countries of Greece, Macedonia and Kosovo by road. The city runs international coach services to Greece via Korce. The bus service in Albania is cheap.
Buses are convenient way of travelling inside Tirana but they neither in very good shape nor the timings are fixed. You can also travel to Albania from places such as Serbia, Greece, Macedonia and Turkey by international roads. From Tirana you can reach most corners of the country by bus.
